Gaio Plinio Secondo (Gaius Plinius Secundus), conosciuto come Plinio il Vecchio (Como, 23 – Stabiae, 25 agosto 79[1]), è stato uno scrittore, ammiraglio e naturalista romano. La sua Naturalis historia, che conta 37 volumi, è il solo lavoro di Plinio il Vecchio che si sia conservato. Quest'opera è stata il testo di riferimento in materia di conoscenze scientifiche e tecniche per tutto il Rinascimento e anche oltre.
