反切 (fǎnqiè) is traditional method of indicating the pronunciation of a character by taking two other characters, one with the same initial and the other with the same final as the character in question (e.g., the pronunciation of 同 tóng is indicated as 徒紅切 or 徒紅反, that is, 徒 t(ú) ＋ 紅 (h)óng, taking the initial of the first character and the final of the second).
