Indexes

In this section you can browse Years, Names and Places indexes of the Athanasius Kircher correspondence. Currently, these indexes include letters metadata only, so they don't list cited names or cited works. If you want to perform a full-text search, you should use the search bar on the top right.
By clicking on , you can expand the main index and sub-indexes of your interest; if you find a grey , it means no letters have been still uploaded in that sub-index; by clicking on the index name, you will instead redirect to that index special page, where you can find detailed information about how the entries have been structured.

Transcription guidelines

To transcribe the letters we are following several simple rules, decided to produce standard transcriptions despite the number of people who are working within this project.
First of all we decided to do two kinds of transcription for each letter:

  • a diplomatic transcription, to reproduce the original structure and words spelling of the letter: within this transcription a small group of TEI tags will be used;
  • a reviewed transcription, where all the abbreviations and some other features of the original text will be regularized to ease the reading, the full text search and the semantic annotation too.

Diplomatic transcription

To do a diplomatic transcription of the letters, it has been implemented the TEI Tags extension devoloped within the Transcribe Bentham Project by Richard Davis. This extension allows the use of a group of TEI tags to give a minimal logical structure to the text and to highlight some text phenomena. All the users are encouraged to use TEI tags because Following there is a brief guide to use the tags.
