Alfonso Gesualdo (1540-14 February 1603) was the son of Luigi, fifth count of of Conza and first prince of Venosa, and Isabella Ferella. Already an apostolic protonotary, he was made Cardinal Deacon of Santa Cecilia on 1 March 1561 and quickly rose through the ranks after that. He was known for his pro-Spanish political views.[1]
