In 1876, shortly after the unification of Italy, the new National Library took up the Collegio Romano of the Jesuits, appropriated its collections and very soon put them at the disposal of scholars. Many would, however, be shocked to notice that manuscripts known to have been part of the library of the Collegio had disappeared. Indeed the Fondo Gesuitico only consists of 1752 manuscripts, prevalently late. In the mid-1950s some of the mystery was unravelled thanks to the publication of the catalogue of the mss. 11414-11709 of the BAV. There is, however, still much to discover: how did these manuscripts come to the BAV? Since there are apparently no inventories nor catalogues of the manuscripts of the Collegio, only scattered references in different publications, do these approximately 1300 manuscripts represent, together with those now at Rome, BNCR, all Latin manuscripts of the Collegio? This article outlines the current state of research.
