Storico e medievista sudtirolese, naturalizzato austriaco; studioso di diplomatica, paleografia e storia del papato medievale. Direttore dell'Archivio di Stato di Bolzano (1921–1927); professore nelle università di Breslavia e di Vienna; direttore a Roma dell'Istituto Storico Austriaco (1956–1964).
