- St. Robert Bellarmine Disputatione de controversiis.
The Historical Archive of the Pontifical Gregorian University holds the manuscripts of one of its most emblematic works: the Controversies. These manuscripts, all in the hand of Cardinal Bellarmine (1542–1621), were drafted over many years and feature numerous revisions. Bellarmine wrote the volumes while lecturing on controversial theology at the Roman College between 1576 and 1587. After some initial, incomplete editions, the revised work was first published in its entirety by the author in Venice in 1596. The success of the work—which represents an attempt to systematize the major theological controversies of the period—is evidenced by its numerous subsequent editions.
