I consulted Lewis & Short Dictionary to try to see if there is any important difference between these two synonyms.
Alius: another, other, different Caeterus: the remainder, the rest
Alius seems more general? "from robbers and other dangers" vs. "from robbers and the rest of the dangers." Perhaps the caeteris contains more certainty of danger.
