P. Robert Leiber S.J. (Deggenhausertal, 10 April 1888-Rome, 18 February 1967) was counsellor to the Apostolic Nuncio Pacelli in Germany (1924-29), then secretary to Cardinal Pacelli himself at the Secretariat of State and finally secretary to Pope Pius XII.
He began his studies in philosophy and theology (interrupted, the latter, by the outbreak of the First World War, during which he served in some country hospitals) at the Ignatiuskolleg in Valkenburg (Holland). After the end of the war - and after attending history lectures for two semesters in Berlin (1921-1922) - he joined Ludwig Pastor's circle of collaborators in Rome, contributing to the research work for the last volumes of the History of the Popes (especially in reference to the figure of Innocent XI).
The first meeting with Eugenio Pacelli - whose advisor and particular secretary he was to be (in Berlin, from 1925; in Rome, from 1930), but always in an unofficial capacity, for over thirty years - dates back to 1924. Leiber taught history at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana throughout his time in Rome. In the last years of his life he was involved (through articles, interviews and public speeches) in the controversy over the relations between Pius XII and National Socialism.
