Otto Struve

Otto Wilhelm von Struve (1819-1905) was a Russian-German astronomer renowned for his work on double stars and stellar spectroscopy. Born in the Russian Empire, he compiled the influential "Struve Double Star Catalog," which cataloged thousands of binary star systems. Struve conducted pioneering research in stellar spectroscopy, contributing to our understanding of stars' chemical composition and temperature. He played a crucial role in developing astronomical instruments and served as director of the Pulkovo Observatory in Russia and later the Berlin Observatory in Germany. His legacy endures as a leading 19th-century astronomer, with his family continuing the tradition of astronomical research.
