The book presents the correspondence between the two great Italian astronomers, Angelo Secchi and Pietro Tacchini, pioneers of astrophysics in Italy and elsewhere, who were active in the second half of the XIX century. Much of this correspondence, in particular the letters from Secchi to Tacchini donated in 1939 by Tacchini’s nephew to the then Director of the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory, disappeared and was considered lost. However, it was recently found in the library of the Arcetri Observatory, bound in a cover so that it looked like a book.

The other part of the correspondence was conserved at the Historical Archive of the Pontificia Università Gregoriana in Rome, which kindly granted authorization for the publication of the book. Father Angelo Secchi, a Jesuit, spent most of his life at the Vatican Observatory of the Collegio Romano in Rome, while Pietro Tacchini carried out his activity at the Palermo Astronomical Observatory until he was invited to take over from Father Secchi as Director of the Observatory of the Collegio Romano.
