Il Lexicon della modernità si propone come uno strumento per affrontare alcuni problemi propri della metodologia storica.
Normalmente la scrittura della storia opera con una terminologia procedente dalla storia stessa. Termini tali come: "uomo", "Dio", "pace", "guerra", "amore", "storia", "libertà", ecc. si riutilizzano in maniera acritica, vale dire, avulsi da una osservazione sul sistema sociale nel quale s'impiegavano. Il risultato di questo uso provoca una serie di ambiguità semantiche e di anacronismi. Queste ambiguità e anacronismi possono essere a loro volta indicatori di cambiamenti strutturali, questo implica rinunciare alle pretese di univocità e di eucronia in virtù delle quali questi fenomeni dovrebbero essere corretti. La comune opinione dell'anacronismo in quanto peccato storiografico imperdonabile[1] potrebbe essere superata considerando l'essere contro il tempo (ἀναχρονισμός) in quanto prova indiziale di ciò che è abituale nell'operazione storiografica: una osservazione che si compie sempre nel presente. A partire da questa unità inosservabile si costituisce la distinzione passato/futuro.
La cosiddetta ambiguità semantica potrà essere considerata come sintomo correlato del cambiamento della struttura sociale e nel contempo come fattore di orientamento per le comunicazioni del sistema sociale. Precisamente nella semantica dei testi, nella semantica colta, si potrà seguire la autodescrizione della società e la costruzione del mondo.
In questo senso, il Lexicon potrebbe essere un aiuto per chi vuole storicizzare lo sguardo: non tanto raccontare ancora una volta ciò che è stato ma piuttosto come è stato descritto ciò che è stato. Questa osservazione di osservazioni è funzionale alla descrizione della intelaiatura cognitiva aiutando a descrivere la fonte documentale, ovvero sia la materia prima con cui lavora lo storico, non come semplice percezione di un io individuale ma come comunicazioni che si scambiano all'interno di un determinato sistema sociale, con una specifica retorica e con una semantica che è sempre a sua volta storica. Le osservazioni che ci offrono i documenti, così come quelle derivanti dalla loro ricezione, sono osservazioni fatte a partire dalla società e dovrebbero essere quindi attribuite al sistema sociale e non all'individuo in quanto tale.[2].
