Over recent decades, research has highlighted the role of the Jesuits in the history of science. However, art technological aspects have not yet been considered. Jesuits are known to have employed images strategically for building their own identity, for pastoral care, education and mission. With the aid of science they tried to render images more overwhelming and effective. Simultaneously, their scientific research, their impressive global network and the flowing of information between the most remote places in the world and their centre in Rome, the Collegio Romano, authorised them to publish books that helped them to be recognised as a modern institution abreast with science, global knowledge and cultural movements. This was the best form of advertising for the order in relation to possible sponsors, supporters and new members. Different types of written art technological sources are presented with a particular focus on their genesis and function.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
