According to my method, the observation, thrice repeated, commonly takes less than 12 minutes, exclusion of a <unclear>detail</unclear> of the forms of the spots, which requires 4 or 5 minutes more, so that coming in the day, and being practicable at any reasonable time of the middle of the day, it would not probably be found very exacting. I should be glad to hear about this from you at your convenience, and will only now add one hint which might not immediately strike you, namely that if the spots are numerous, or peculiarly situated, it is occasionally convenient to <unclear>observe</unclear> the <unclear>panorama</unclear> over the two series separately and alternately.<lb/>
I perceive however that I entered in my journal on that night a brief note which I overlooked with preparing my observations for the Royal Astronomical Society, and the <hi rend="underline">Astronomical Nachrichten</hi>, referring to the <hi rend="underline">brighter line at the interior edge of B</hi>; viz. - "The <hi rend="underline">brighter line</hi> just at the interior edge of B is visible: it is very narrow." - This brighter line is well shown in the lithograph of my picture which accompanied my paper on Saturn in 1852, and appeared in No. 840 of the <hi rend="underline">Astronomical Nachrichten</hi>. It also appears in W. Lassell's picture on the same page; and it is mentioned by him in his more detailed account of his observations at Saturn printed in No. 922 of the <hi rend="underline">Astronomical Nachrichten</hi>; under date Dec. 6 (1852): but he had <hi rend="underline">previously to that date</hi> received from me a copy of my picture from which the lithograph was drawn; and in my accompanying letter I had drawn his attention to that point. - This fact he does not allude to in his description.<lb/>
The concentric bands of shading, of different degrees of darkness, on the surface of B, constitute a remarkable feature of that ring. - I just saw them distinctly on 26 Oct. 1851, and have detailed my observations in No. 793 of the <hi rend="underline">Astronomical Nachrichten</hi>, as well as in a paper which was sent to the R. Lassell also mentions these bands of shading in his observations at Malta on 29 Oct. 1852; but, as usual, does not refer to any previous observations of the phenomena, though he was fully aware of them. - It is remarkable that neither Hershel I nor Hershel II ever noticed these bands; - nor even [[Name::Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve|Struve]] at [[Place::Tartu Observatoorium|Dorpat]] in 1826; but this negative evidence is of no great weight and cannot be deemed sufficient to prove that the phenomenon is <hi rend="underline">variable</hi>.<noinclude><references/> {{TurnPage}}</noinclude>

My dear Sir<lb/>
<span class="abbreviation" style="text-decoration: underline dotted" title="Regarding"></span>Re the other leaf, I place a<lb/>
copy of the paper which was inserted in the Box<lb/>
containing the copies of the British Standards.<lb/>
I believe that you received my letter of April 12,<lb/>
containing some farther particulars relating to the<lb/>
Standard of Weight.<lb/>
In the meteorological papers, the term “Umidità”<lb/>
is used as a quantity expressible by a number,<lb/>
but it is not explained. Does it mean “the<lb/>
proportion of vapour actually in the air to the vapour<lb/>
required for complete saturation”?<lb/>
I believe that <gap/> the booksellers at Rome<lb/>
frequently have store of old books. Could you<lb/>
conveniently make inquiry for “Vita di Ansaldo<lb/>
Grimaldi, Napoli, 1769”? I am anxious to procure<lb/>
it if possible. I cannot give the name of the author.<lb/>

I am, my dear Sir, Yours very faithfully<lb/>
