Se propone en este artículo una interpretación, en el sentido hermenéutico, de dosgrabados de la Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae de Athanasius Kircher con el fin derecoger una tradición en el modo de comprender el fenómeno de la refracción de la luzy su manipulación químico mecánica. La ciencia alquímica empírica que nutrió lasinvestigaciones durante el siglo XVII de lo que entendemos hoy como ciencia modernapermeó un legado que llega hasta siglo XIX para referirse y entender procesos como fotográfico.
